At Kitepassion Tarifa Kiteschool, teaching kitesurfing to children is a priority. We have years of experience and a specialized approach to ensure that the little ones learn this exciting sport in a safe and fun way.
Why is Tarifa ideal for learning kitesurfing?
Tarifa is known as the kitesurfing capital of Europe. Its stable wind conditions, wide beaches, and certified schools make it the perfect environment for both adults and children who want to get started in the sport.
When can a child start practicing kitesurfing?
According to the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization), it is recommended to start at these age ranges:
- 3 to 6 years: Kite flying from land.
- 6 to 9 years: Introduction to the water and exercises like waterstart.
- 9 to 12 years: Developing autonomy as independent riders.
In addition to age, the child’s weight, emotional maturity, and cognitive ability should be considered.
The golden rule: Learn by playing
Learning should always be fun. We create small groups so that children feel comfortable, we generate playful dynamics, and we adapt the teaching to the pace of each student.
First phase: Kite control
We begin with a two-line trainer kite, uninflated, with less power. This allows the student to learn how to fly in the wind window, control the bar, and respond to situations like gusts or wind loss. Once they master this step, we move on to a four-line kite with short lines (7-10 meters), providing greater control and safety.
Second phase: Water contact (Bodydrag)
We start with an exercise called tandem bodydrag, where the child is connected to the instructor in the water. They observe and feel how the kite moves and how to position their body to glide. Then, they will be the one piloting the kite, always with the instructor nearby, ensuring a safe and guided experience.
Third phase: The Waterstart
Once the child masters kite control and the bodydrag, they begin the process of getting up on the board. They will learn the kite movement to initiate navigation (waterstart stroke), and soon, they will be gliding on the water with confidence.
Class duration according to age
- 3 to 6 years: 15 to 30 minutes per session
- 6 to 9 years: 1 to 2 hours
- 9 to 12 years: up to 2.5 hours
The progression is personalized and tailored to each child, without rush, but without pauses.
Tips for Parents
✓ Evaluate your child’s maturity: It is important that the child is physically and emotionally ready.
✓ Choose a certified school: Look for instructors experienced with children, like at KitePassion.
✓ Use appropriate equipment: Board, kite, helmet, and wetsuit should fit the child’s size and level.
✓ Check the weather: Make sure classes are held in safe conditions: consistent wind and no waves.

Kitesurfing is more than a sport: it’s a tool to strengthen confidence, coordination, and a love for the sea. Teaching it with responsibility and passion is the foundation of our work.
